Documentary Ottawa Family Photography : Justin & Danielle in The Glebe
Justin and Danielle capture life as it is with documentary family photography in The Glebe
Longtime friends, Justin and Danielle, asked me to capture their life with their two boys, Ellis and Everet with a documentary family photography session in Ottawa's Glebe community.
Since photographing their Perth wedding at Danielle's parents Alpaca Ranch years ago, Justin and Danielle have moved to Vancouver and back with lots of change.
Now back home in Ottawa, close to family and friends, J&D have settled into life at their home at Strathcona Ave.
When it comes to my family photography sessions, it's important to keep it as close to real life as possible. Contriving a documentary photography session with setup portraits and activities that are designed to please the camera or put on appearances defeats the point of a documentary "day-in-the-life" family photography session.
We started the day at Justin and Danielle's on their patio, enjoying the warm summertime weather. With active kids, it's important to get them active and doing stuff.
After a little snack and some laughs, we hit the road and walked to nearby Patterson Creek park.
With the heat wave in Ottawa drying us out we walked to Little Victories coffee shop on Bank St. With documentary family photography, almost everything gets photographed. Sometimes it's these little times of transition that make for great images.
At LV, Ellis dined on a donut while we rested our feet. Even in these "down" times, I'm working to make great images - weaving my way between chairs to get the right angles.
On the way back home, we stopped at First Ave Public School to let Ellis run off some of that sugar from the donut while Justin took a cat nap with Everet on his chest.
I love the shots of them walking back home amidst the old architecture and corner stores - you really get a sense of place and community.
