Ottawa Engagement Photography : Tim & Andrea
Tim and Andrea's old school engagement photography session ends with gelato and a dance in the dark
As an Ottawa wedding photographer, one of the great ways to establish a connection with your client is though an Ottawa engagement photography session.
Sometimes my clients have very specific ideas for their engagement session and it's fun to interpret those concepts through my style and vision.
Other times, the client is open to my concepts and ideas and that's where Tim & Andrea come in. When it came time for their shoot we through around a couple ideas. One was an ice cream shop out of town and while it looked cool I wasn't sure we could get enough variety out of the engagement shoot there. Tim said he was open to places I'd like to shoot and I offered a couple spots that I hadn't used before: the Adult High School for it's architecture, a government industrial site, a cool white building I found while out for a walk with my girlfriend.
I scouted the locations during the time we had scheduled to shoot and sent pics. He liked them all but added a request for some greenery too.
When the time for the shoot day came I arranged to meet them at the Adult High School and we went over the game plan. I suggested we take some time to hit Stella Luna Gelato's new space in Hintonburg because, as a patron, I knew the light would be really nice around 7 pm that night.
Now it was going to feel more like a date and not a series of two people standing around various buildings in Ottawa.
Andrea had wisely booked the day off for a hair and makeup trial for the wedding so she was ready to rock!
I love integrating architectural elements into my couples photography sessions. I've driven past this high school in Ottawa's Little Italy neighbourhood numerous times while on the way to my girlfriend's place. I love the way light bounced off the cream walls to create a multi-directional lighting effect just from the Sun.
The light and shadow created by the wall pillars was really graphic.
On the way for ice cream we stopped at a fun graphic wall in Little Italy for a quick shot.
During my day-to-day adventures I'm always seeing places that look like they could be great sets for engagement photography sessions in Ottawa.
The new Stella Luna Gelato Cafe in Hintonburg is bright and airy but has great brick wall for texture. The light coming through the windows around 7 pm in the Summer is fantastic. Tim and Andrea got a cup to share and I really just let them enjoy it with little guidance.
After that we headed to catch the sunset at Westboro Beach - making sure to get some greenery. A slow walk along a bike path led to catching the final moments of a setting sun.
After the sun had set, I had a brain wave and had them go to another spot I had scoped out a long time ago for a possible engagement shoot.
Standing in between the roads of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, I had Tim and Andrea have a little fun dancing together while I shot from a bike path below.
All-in-all this engagement shoot had a lot of fresh locations and the selection of images is fantastic.
Now that they have this Ottawa engagement session under their belt I know Tim and Andrea will knock their wedding day photos out of the park in September.
