All Saints Event Space : Justin & Esther
Ottawa Wedding Photography full of surprises and meaningful moments
I've been a wedding photographer in Ottawa long enough to have pretty much seen it all.
That's not to say that I'm bored documenting a wedding. Not at all. It's just that they all seem have to similar patterns and you know what's coming next.
With Justin and Esther's wedding at Southminster Church and All Saints Event Space in Ottawa, it was different.
First, it was a smaller, winter wedding during a cold-snap in Canada's capital city, far from a bohemian summer affair.
While Justin is a friend and fellow photojournalist in Ottawa, I can't say that I knew him well. After shooting his wedding, however, I have a much better sense of the depth of his layered character.
I knew even less of Esther, besides that she was this kind and beautiful woman with striking blue eyes who loved her man very much.
After photographing Esther get ready with her family and maid-of-honour in her apartment just down the street from the church, we walked through the crisp, cold air to Southminster Church on the edge of the Rideau Canal in Old Ottawa South.
There I caught up with Justin.
In a back room, far from the nave, he waiting calmly with friend and pastor, Dave Harder. A large stained glass window bathed a lonely piano in warm light.
Out of the blue, Justin decided he kill some time and play - I didn't know he played!
I've never photographed a groom playing piano in a church before - something new! The light from the window added an extra level of drama to the scene as it bounced off the warm wood-grained hue and back into Justin's face.
During the ceremony, friends of Justin and Esther's sang two gorgeous songs. I could feel my eyes watery slightly but when I saw Justin and Esther both lost in the moment and singing their hearts out, I buckled down and went to work.
I love finding people lost in a moment.
The Pastor, Dave Harder, set a very laid-back and personal tone throughout the ceremony, taking a minute to offer them his own gift with a heartfelt story.
After the ceremony, we travelled to the NAC for photos and finished off the outdoor portion with a skate on Rink of Dreams at Ottawa City Hall.
Since there was time to kill before the reception, Justin, Esther and I improvised and decided to warm up at a coffee shop for a bit and on the way back to the car, grabbed a fun urban-style frame.
All Saints Event space had transformed their old church in Ottawa's Sandy Hill community into an elegant backdrop for the reception.
The night ended with one of the most lit dance floors I've photographed all year which makes my job really easy. There's nothing worse than trying to make something work when only 10 people out of 150 or more are on the dance floor.
All the best to Justin and Esther!
